There is no doubt that the shared spaces on Sixty-Ninth Street have helped build the warm, vibrant Episcopal community that we all cherish. Among these treasured places is one that, while not often seen by parents, holds a central role in the Episcopal experience: the beloved roof playground. Recently, the roof deck received a beautiful refresh with the addition of lush green turf, bringing bright new energy to this special spot. The big reveal took place at the start of summer camp, and the children’s and faculty’s excitement was absolutely priceless! At Episcopal, playing on the roof is more than just free play, it’s a rite of passage. Students are granted access only after completing their first year at school. In the spring, younger groups take part in a “mini orientation,” where they get their first glimpse of the space and a quick taste of the play equipment they so eagerly anticipate returning to in the fall. The roof deck features a shiny fire pole and adventurous monkey bars - two signature challenges that every Episcopal child looks forward to mastering.
Teachers carefully guide children’s progress, helping them set personal goals and build confidence as they conquer each new skill. The sound of tiny feet marching up the staircase is often accompanied by giggles, excited chatter, and animated plans for play. Classic games like What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?, Captain’s Orders, and Mother May I? fill the space with joy and energy. These activities aren’t just fun - they foster inclusion, teamwork, and collaboration, while strengthening each child’s listening skills, coordination, and agility. For years, the roof playground has been a place of timeless fun, where students run laps, form friendships, and create lasting memories. In fact, one of the most common requests we receive during Family Days and Alumni events is, “Can we go up to the roof?” The roof playground continues to be a cornerstone of the Episcopal experience - a joyful haven in the hurried and busy life of New York City where childhood thrives and community grows.
